Kefalonia is the island to visit if you want to avoid the crowds. The island’s mountainous landscape is a welcome break in the otherwise commercialized Greek islands. In Kefalonia you will find a tranquil atmosphere, the island has a reputation for being a bit more sophisticated and in summer the island attract several celebrities. Stephen Spielberg is one of those who have enjoyed the sun and beaches Kefalonia. The island has been rebuilt after a devastating earthquake that destroyed much of the infrastructure in 1953.

The restaurant and bars in Kefalonia has replaced the plastic chairs for better-looking wooden chairs. The overall feeling on the island is quality and the islanders are friendly and genuine.

The fish may be a bit more expensive here, as well as the souvenirs, but on the other hand you do not find many karaoke bars blasting music until 4 am. Kefalonia has a nice mix of visiting nationalities; many Italians take a boat over to the island. Neighbouring islands to Kefalonia are Zakynthos, Lefkada and Ithaca. There are day trips over to Ithaca from Kefalonia and the journey takes about one hour.

The island is the largest of the Ionian islands and the nature is lush, its southern coast is lined with nice beaches popular by families with small children. On the east coast you can enjoy the dramatic scenery that only a mountainous island offers, while the plains are covered with vines. It is here the Robola grapes thrive, providing dry wine with distinctive citrus character. During your stay here you will find plenty of opportunity to taste the wine.

Getting there

The largest port on the island is Sami linking the island to Patras, Ithaca, Corfu, Ancona, Bari and Brindisi in Italy. The second largest port of the island is Poros and connects the island to Killini.

From Argostolis port you can travel to Poros, Lixouri and Killini daily. It is also possible to get to Zakynthos with Hydrofoil from Argostolis port.

Where to stay

The biggest tourist resort on the island is called Lassi, another popular place is Skala, but if you want to rub shoulders with celebrities you shall choose the trendy Fiskardo.

Sights

The historical and folklore museum in Argostoli will give you an insight to the island life. The gift shop offers some great souvenirs to take home as a memory.

Melanissi Lake, a fascinating underground lake, the magical interplay of light and water inside the cave are simply magic. No trip to Greece is complete without a visit to the lake. The best time to visit the cave is at midday when the sun will be at its zenith, so that the entire cave is filled with a strange blue light. According to the myth, the cave was named after a nymph named Melissanthi who committed suicide because her love was not answered. The water in the lake is a mixture of freshwater and seawater, you will find the cave close to Karavomilos village.

Best beaches

Myrtos is one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece. The intense colours, the pebbles and its crystal clear waters, make its visitors wanting to return. Antisamos beach, also known as Captain Corelli’s beach. Kamini Beach, this is the beach where the sea turtles lay their eggs.

Nightlife

The nightlife in Kefalonia offers everything from a quiet drink in the harbour to modern night clubs. In the tourist resorts you will find plenty to amuse you. Try Kastro Club in Fiskardo, there has been no saving of gunpowder in this club. The club is a former mine, now converted into a nightclub with a huge dance floor. This club is popular by the elite in their designer outfits, no socks and sandals in here please. The prices of drinks are high, but why not indulge for an evening? The club is open only during July and August.

Shopping

There are plenty of shops that will tempt you with local produce. Ceramics, the local wine, the islands wonderful honey and almond pralines.

Do not miss

Do not miss a day trip over to Ithaca from Kefalonia, the journey takes about one hour.

Visit Calliga Vineyard, Gentilini Vineyard and Metaxas Wine Estates, all located near Argostoli.

Did you know?

Movie recording on the island For those of you who have read the book, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, Kefalonia will certainly feel like home. The book follows a family from Kefalonia for several decades; the film based on the book was obviously set on the island.

Although Zante is the most important nesting site for loggerhead turtles, there is a nesting site at Kefalonia by Kaminia beach.
